Texas Authors Book Club at the Fielder House Museum
This exciting collaboration between the library and the Arlington Historical Society features the best of Texas-focused writing—nonfiction and fiction, classic and contemporary. The unifying element is that all selections are "native in the most obvious sense: set here, centered here, and, for the most part, written here.” (McMurtry)
The 2023-24 selections give a good idea of what is to come:
- September: The Longhorns—J. Frank Dobie
- October: Horseman, Pass By—Larry McMurtry
- November: Goodbye to a River—John Graves
- December: —
- January: Empire of the Southern Moon—C. Gwynne
- February: No Country for Old Men—Cormac McCarthy
- March: The Which Way Tree—Elizabeth Crook
- April: In a Narrow Grave—Larry McMurtry
- May 16: The Gay Place—Billy Lee Brammer
- June 20 & beyond—The slate is TBA, but the club is definitely continuing!
May 16: Billy Lee Brammer’s The Gay Place is a Texas cult classic. Though it’s fictionalized, it won’t take long to see LBJ in the protagonist, Arthur “Goddam” Fenstemaker. Nor can it be ignored that Brammer was once a member of LBJ’s staff.
